While this day is an extra day off from work, a day of sales and BBQs, it’s really a sacred day to reflect on all we are blessed with.
I was raised to honor Veterans, those that have served. My Uncle Bud stands out the most in my mind. He was a proud Veteran and that pride transferred through the generations in our family.
Family parties were held at the VFW post, even my first ‘surprise’ baby shower. And no family party ever ended without Uncle Bud belting out “God Bless America”. He sang it with all the pride and love in his heart for our country. Uncle Bud has passed, but I still get choked up when I hear that song like he’s standing beside me singing along.
It wasn’t like he sat me down and explained why it was important to honor veterans or love our country, it was just something you learned from being around him. It was just who he was that made you ‘get it’. My Uncle Bud lived his message and he honored his freedom.
So I can’t help but see America as the land of opportunity. Yes, we have problems, we have challenges, but where else in the world can you do all the things you can freely do in America?
The gratitude I feel in my heart on a day like today is immense. Women in other countries are repressed, banned from education and their own safety. They are even deprived of something as simple as driving a car.
In America I have been granted the right to fulfill my heart’s desires, pursue my biggest dreams and even run my own business – and I don’t need anyone’s permission to do it. The soldier’s that have served gave me permission.
The concept of freedom means different things to different people.
What does freedom mean for you?
Even with all this freedom, many people are living their life feeling trapped, stuck and unhappy. They don’t feel free and yet as I just mentioned we are free to do just about anything we choose.
That seems so sad to me, such a waste of an incredible gift.
Too many people are living their life feeling the opposite of freedom – inside.
They feel emotionally repressed, a slave to their negative thoughts, feelings of “can’t” and “not possible for me” and as a result their hopes and dreams fall away. They stay a prisoner of their circumstances.
One of the comments I hear most often during initial assessments is “I just want to be free”.
Let me say it again, you are free to do just about anything you choose.
Whether that be write a book, start a business, sell your artwork, teach classes on something you’re passionate about – the possibilities are endless.
What have YOU always dreamed of doing?
What’s stopping you from doing it?
Today I pay special tribute to the fallen soldiers that guaranteed my freedom and to my Uncle Bud for all he taught me just by being the person he was. I will never forget. It’s no wonder I’m so passionate about helping others find their freedom.
As you honor those that have served, ask yourself…
What is freedom for me?
Am I honoring the freedom I’ve been given to the fullest?
Am I pursuing the dreams I was granted permission to pursue?
Don’t let your freedom go to waste.
